Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery is a medical specialty dealing with the correction or restoration of bodily form and/or function. While famous for aesthetic surgery, plastic surgery also includes many types of reconstructive surgery as well as microsurgery and even the treatment of burns.
Plastic Surgery
What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?
Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to enhance the patient’s appearance and self-esteem. Reconstructive surgery is performed to correct developmental abnormalities, trauma, congenital defects, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally performed to improve the function of a specific area or body part, but it can also be carried out to encourage a normal appearance.
What is recovery from plastic surgery like?
Each patient will have a different experience when it comes to post-operative pain. While some patients may describe the pain as an ache, others feel greater discomfort. Your surgeon will prescribe appropriate pain medications post-operation, and these will help minimize discomfort. Most facial cosmetic operations have minimal discomfort post-operatively. Liposuction is slightly more uncomfortable, and operations that require elevation or tightening of the muscles, like abdominoplasty or breast augmentation, have discomfort equal to that of a C-section.
How long will I take to recover and when can I go back to work?
The length of time it takes to recuperate after plastic surgery varies depending on the procedure performed and the individual patient. Most patients will require assistance for the first two days. After that, most patients are able to care for themselves but some may still need assistance depending on their needs and the needs of their family. It is recommended that you consult your plastic surgeon in order to discuss how best to handle your recuperation period in order to heal properly and effectively.
What plastic surgery procedures do we offer?
Dermalase’s consultant plastic surgeons are able to perform a variety of surgical procedures, including:
- Line Freezing Treatment Injections: These injections temporarily freeze the muscle to provide a fresh, subtle appearance.
- Facial Implants: This procedure uses implants to augment the cheeks and chin.
- Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty): This procedure improves droopy, sleepy looking eyelids.
- Brow Lift: The forehead lift is also known as an endobrow lift, an open brow lift, or a temporal lift. The procedure cosmetically corrects sagging in the forehead skin, upper eyelids and eyebrows.
- Rhinoplasty (Nose Job): This procedure mends or modifies the nose.
- Facelift (Rhytidectomy): This procedure removes excess skin from the forehead, face, and neck in order to reduce wrinkle development.
- Ear pinning (Otoplaty): This procedure brings the ears closer to the head.
- Liposuction or Lipoplasty (Suction-Assisted Lipectomy): This procedure removes the extra fat in different parts of the body. The three types of fat are tumescent, ultrasonic, and super-wet.
- Breast Augmentation (Augmentation Mamaplasty): This procedure uses breast implants to increase the size of the breasts. This is also known as breast enlargement.
- Breast Reduction: This procedure reduces the size of large and drooping breasts.
- Breast Lift (Matopexy): This procedure lifts and alters the shape of breasts that are sagging.
- Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty): This procedure removes extra fat and skin from the abdominal area.
- Buttock Augmentation (Buttock Implants): This procedure uses implants to increase the size of the buttocks.
- Thigh Lift: This procedure tightens sagging muscles and removes excess skin in the thigh area.
- Calf Augmentation: This procedure uses implants to increase the size of the calf/calves.
- Ankle Shaping: This procedure helps to remove subcutaneous fat. It does not affect the muscle or bone structure.
- Cheek Dimples: A hugely popular and reversible procedure. A small stitch is placed in the gum to create a ‘simple dimple’ on the cheek area.
What are the risks of having plastic surgery?
Because every patient’s body is different and will, therefore, react differently to surgery, we recommend that you book a consultation with one of our consultant doctors before undergoing plastic surgery. Should you make the decision to undergo plastic surgery, you will be required to fill in a consent form.
